Arra Rovers 3 Clonmel Celtic 3 (Celtic win 4 3 on penalties)

Clonmel Celtic advanced to the 5th round of the FAI Junior Cup after eventually overcoming the strong challenge of North Tipp Premier team Arra Rovers in Portroe last Sunday. Celtic got off to the worst possible start when they found themselves a goal down after 2 minutes. A long throw into the Celtic box wasn’t dealt with and Eddie Lawlor’s deflected shot beat John Ryan to give Rovers the lead. Celtic struggled and were second best for the first 20 minutes as a strong Arra side looked the more dangerous. Celtic gradually began to settle midway through the first half and were instantly rewarded when Andy Cosgrave glanced home a header to level the game after 22 minutes. Celtic grew in confidence and now looked the more likely side. When they got the ball down and played some football they looked the more composed and competent side but the problem was they weren’t doing this enough and often found themselves struggling to cope with Arra’a more direct approach. The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 at the break but minutes into the second half Celtic were behind again. Wayne Murray was caught in possession and from the resulting cross John Hogan restored the North Tipp team’s lead. The game then developed into a real scrap with both teams believing the game was there for the taking. On the hour mark Celtic were level again when Andy Cosgrave played Adam McSherry through and when he was brought down there was no doubting that a penalty was going to be the result. McSherry fired home the penalty to make it 2-2. Ten minutes later Celtic were ahead when once again Adam McSherry found himself through after another good ball from Andy Cosgrave. The recent signing from Carrick finished expertly to put Celtic in front for the first time. However Celtic were unable to hold onto the lead when with ten minutes remaining a goal mouth scramble resulted from a Rovers corner and John Hogan bundled the ball home to leave the score 3-3 at full time. In extra time both side created a chance each with Andy Cosgrave coming close to a winner for Celtic. However a close tight game was eventually settled on penalties with Celtic converting all their spot kicks through Adam McSherry, Paddy Wack O’Donnell, Johnny Cagney and Wayne Murray to advance 4-3 in the shootout. .
