Clonmel Celtic V Two Mile Borris

Clonmel Celtic 2 Two Mile Borris 1

Though they had to wait for a late winner Clonmel Celtic were full value for the three points against a dogged Borris at Celtic Park last Sunday. After picking up a good point against Town in their opener it was vital they got something from this game and Celtic delivered with a very impressive second half showing. Celtic were slow to start and Borris edged the early moments. However on twelve minutes Celtic were ahead when following pressure exerted on a Borris defender by Stephen Ryan the ball found its way to Paul Kennedy who rounded the keeper and coolly finished for his first goal of the new campaign. However a minute later Borris were level after some sloppy Celtic play allowed Martin Dermody lob the advancing John Ryan for a good finish to leave it 1-1. Boris probably had the better chances for the remainder of the half. On 22 minutes John Ryan got down well to keep out a misdirected Stephen Ryan header and on 34 minutes he saved again fom Danny Graham. Celtic produced heir best football in the second half as they took control of the game. After 2 minutes Brian Waters forced a fine save from the Borris keeper who turned his effort around the post. On 53 minutes Eddie Doyle shot narrowly wide and a minute later Stephen Ryan saw his effort strike the foot of the post. Celtic were well on top now with Andy Cosgrave and Brian Waters becoming increasingly influential in the centre while Stephen Ryan and Paul Kennedy were causing endless problems up front. Borris were still a threat with their direct approach and John Ryan had to produce a fine save on 69 minutes to deny Borris an unlikely lead. The Celtic defence were excellent wih David Peters particularly impressive. On 72 minutes Eddie Doyle had Celtic's best chance but his attempt lacked direction and power and the Borris keeper made an easy save. Celtic continued to apply the pressure with Paul Kennedy again coming close before Brian Waters glanced a header wide on 83 minutes. Just when it looked as if Celtic were to drop two important points they got the crucial breakthrough. Johnny Cagney, with time on the right, played a ball into the box and with the deftest of touches Paul Kennedy glided the ball home for the crucial winner.

Starman for Celtic: Stephen Ryan
