Cahir Park V Clonmel Celtic

Cahir Park 1 Clonmel Celtic 4

Clonmel Celtic maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a fine 4-1 away victory to Cahir Park. Celtic started the game very sluggishly and found themselves a goal down inside the first 20 minutes. A quick free kick caught the Celtic defence napping and Keith Maguire found himself unmarked in the box to put his side in front. This seemed to kick Celtic into life and they should have equalised when Paul Kennedy found himself one on one with the Cahir keeper after some good work by Stephen Ryan, but his shot was struck tamely and easily gathered by advancing keeper. Celtic pulled level with 10 minutes to go before half time through Andrew Cosgrave. Cosgrave picked the ball up in his own half and was allowed the freedom to carry the ball unchallenged to the opposition’s 18 yard box, where his shot struck the leg of the defender and luckily found the back of the net. Celtic were very lucky to go in at the break on level terms, but whatever was said at half time manager Kenny “Jose” O’Shea seemed to give Celtic more urgency in the second half. Celtic came out a different team and took the lead through Paul Kennedy. After some great work by Stephen Ryan, he then fed Eggy Doyle down the right flank who in turn whipped in a great ball to the front post for Kennedy to slot home for his fifth goal of the season. With David Peters and Ian McCollum starting to stamp their authority on the game in defence, and with the midfield duo of Andrew Cosgrave and Danny Madigan winning the midfield battle, Celtic looked like a far better unit and extended their lead through Cosgrave half way through the second half. A great ball in by Wayne Murray found Cosgrave unmarked in the box who in turn clinically finished to claim his third goal in 2 games from midfield. Cahir pushed forward looking for a goal that would set up a nervy finish for Celtic but the Celtic defence, and in particular John Ryan in goal who showed what a good goalkeeper he is with a very assured display, were well able for any attacks that they found themselves under. With the end of the nearing Celtic were awarded a penalty. Stephen Ryan, who looked dangerous throughout, showed great fitness and awareness as he broke from midfield and fed Ross Doyle, whose shot was handled by the Cahir defender, giving the referee had no option but to award a penalty. Paul Kennedy made no mistake from the spot to claim an impressive 6 goals in 5 games. This win puts Cetlic within touching distance of top spot in the table. Celtic face St. Michaels at home next weekend and a win could see Celtic claim top spot in the league. Let’s hope they can continue their impressive form and push for honours come the end of the season.

Starman for Celtic: Ian McCollum
