Clonmel Celtic advanced to the second round of the Tipperary Cup with a comfortable 6-1 win over third division side Clerihan. Celtic started like a side that meant business and had Clerihan on the backfoot from the start. In the first ten minutes Kevin Kennedy and Graham Doyle both came close to giving Celtic the lead. On 11 minutes Celtic were in front. A cleverly worked corner kick saw Eddie Doyle's cross/shot headed in from close range by Paddy O'Donnell. Celtic continued to exert pressure and Clerihan were struggling to cope with Celtic's flowing attacks. On 22 minutes excellent work by Eddie Doyle on the right saw his pin point pass find Barry O'Neill who coolly finished to put Celtic in the driving seat. The game was over three minutes later when it was Doyle again, this time on the left, who crossed to find Barry O'Neill and he tapped home to leave the score 3-0 at the break. Clerihan battled bravely throughout and particularly impressive was their goalkeeper who made some great saves. He made one fine save from Paddy O'Donnell on 46 minutes but from the corner that resulted Darren Burns volleyed home Celtic's fourth. Clerihan did get one back on 58 minutes when Declan O'Brien, albeit from an offside position, shot past stand in Celtic keeper Peter O'Sullivan. On 71 minutes came the best goal of the game when Stephen Ryan's through ball was expertly finished by Darren Burns. Five minutes later Darren Burns completed his hat trick when he headed home at the far post to leave the final score 6-1 to Celtic. Although it may have been against third division opponents this was a good Celtic performance especially in the first half when they played some good football and looked dangerous when they attacked.
