After an impressive start to the season Clonmel Celtic were brought crashing back to earth when they were thumped 5-3 by an understrength Killusty side last Sunday. Celtic found themselves a goal down after just 2 minutes when an unmarked Aaron Kelly headed home a Jimmy O'Meara free kick. You didn't feel there was any need to panic at this stage as there was plenty of time left and Celtic soon began to get on top with David McSherry and Paddy O'Donnell both coming close in the opening 20 minutes. However disaster struck in the 23rd minute wen a defensive mix up between Raymie Boyle and John Landers allowed Aaron Kelly in to score his second with a neat finish. Celtic had now a bit of work to do to get back into this game but at this stage the signs of a comeback were not very encouraging. Despite having plenty of possession Celtic's final ball was poor and their efforts on goal were substandard. They needed one back before half time and James Power should have provided that on forty minutes but he delayed too long when put through and the keeper saved at his feet. Celtic maintained the pressure on the restart and Stephen Ryan was inches away with a header on 50 minutes. Celtic were then dealt a cruel blow on 54 minutes when a Philip Ryan shot took a wicked deflection and crashed in off the underside of the bar to make it 3-0 to Killusty and effectively kill off the game. It was to get worse though as on 75 minutes William Doyle scored from the spot to make it four. In fairness to Celtic they kept plugging away and a minute after going four behind James Power finished well to pull one back. On 86 minutes Stephen Ryan powered home a header from a Graham Doyle corner. However any hope of a dramatic comeback were quashed on 90 minutes when Jimmy O'Meara volleyed home to make the points safe for Killusty. Celtic did have the last say though when in injury time James Power scored a fine goal to make it 5-3 to Killusty. It difficult to take any positives from this game. However credit to Celtic who kept playing football for ninety minutes and never resorted lumping the ball aimlessly forward. James Power who looked out of sorts in the first half recovered well in the second to score two fine goals. You feel there is plenty of goals to come from his partnership with David McSherry. And Celtic do not have to wait too long to get this result 'out of their system' as they have a home tie against Old Bridge on Wednesday night to get their season back on track. This result was a blow to our league hopes but it was by no means a fatal blow.
