Clonmel Celtic V Killusty

Clonmel Celtic 1 Killusty 1

Clonmel Celtic had to settle for a share of the spoils in this relegation tussle with Killusty last Sunday. You felt going into this game that nothing but three points would suffice against bottom club Killusty, and so Celtic are left with some anxious times ahead. Killusty started the better and some nervous moments in the Celtic defence saw the Fethard side with some early opportunities. However on 15 minutes Celtic took the lead with a stunning strike from Danny Madigan. Picking the ball up about thirty yards out he let fly and his superb strike nestled in the top corner to give Celtic the lead. Killusty should have been level on 22 minutes when Jimmy O'Meara was played in but his attempted lob cleared the crossbar. Celtic should have scored a second before the break and you feared they would rue their missed chances in the second period. On two occasions Tommy Kiely was played through but both times he put the ball over with just the keeper to beat. In between these efforts he had another one on one with the keeper but on that occasion the Killusty custodian was equal to his effort. On 40 minutes a Stephen Ryan header had the keeper scrambling across his goal but the ball hit the post and went wide. Four minutes into the second half a Graham Doyle free kick went narrowly wide. However as often happens when you fail to get the crucial second that your general play deserved Celtic were punished on 67 minutes. From a corner Celtic failed to clear and Tony Shelly was on hand to stab the ball home from close range. The game really opened up as both sides went for what could have been a crucial win. On 78 minutes Danny Madigan worked an opening but the keeper did well to get down and block his effort. Celtic should have wrapped it up on 85 minutes when from a Stephen Ryan cross Mark Maguire headed against the post from a very good position. Killusty were proving dangerous on the break and Jimmy O'Meara was nearly in again but his effort was inches wide. Celtic nearly clinched it with a minute remaining when Wayne Kiely broke through but the keeper made another great save to ultimately earn a point for Killusty. So Celtic had to be happy with a point. The crucial period in this game was the 15 minutes before the break when Celtic had multiple chances to score a second. How damaging their failure to do so remains to be seen.
