St. Michaels V Clonmel Celtic

St. Michaels 3 Clonmel Celtic 0

Clonmel Celtic's indifferent form of late continued with a 3 goal to nil loss at the hands of St. Michaels. Right from the kick off Celtic conceded a soft free kick. From the resulting free Celtic had 2 or 3 chances to clear their lines, and their failure to do so lead to Paul Breen scoring a magnificent over head kick. This was the one thing manager Kenny O’Shea warned his players against, and so all team tactics were in disarray. Celtic were at 6s and 7s for a fifteen minute spell and were lucky not to concede again. Celtic did pull themselves back into things and were unlucky not to pull a goal back when Paul Kennedys attempted lob was gratefully gathered by the Michaels keeper. Stephan Ryan also has a fine long range effort saved well by the Michaels keeper. Just as things seemed to be turning for Celtic, Michaels struck again just as the end of the half approached. A break down the left resulted in the ball falling kindly to Anthony Glasheen, and he made no mistake in slotting the ball into the corner of the Celtic goal. After making two changes at half time Celtic seemed a more confident team and looked like they could get something from the game yet. Their best chance was when Stephen Ryan was clear through with two Celtic players unmarked in the box. However Stephen took the wrong option and tried to score for himself. Should he have squared the ball it surely would have been a goal for Celtic. That missed chance seemed to kill off Celtics hopes and as the game neared its end Michaels showed what a good team they are by scoring their third goal. Although Celtic played well in patches, this game showed what level Celtic need to reach if they wish to be competing for honors each year. Kenny O’Shea can take a bit of heart from the second half performance and the return of a number of players. Celtic play The Old Bridge next week and it looks at this stage that the only way Celtic can win any honors this year is through the Tipperary Cup, in which they face Sarsfield Rovers the following week.

Starman for Celtic: Johnny Cagney
