Clonmel Celtic V St. Michaels

Clonmel Celtic 3 St. Michaels 1

Clonmel Celtic produced their best performance of the season to outclass St Michaels on a 3-1 scoreline in Clonmel last Sunday. Fears that Celtic may not have been up to the challenge, with nothing to play for and points vital for St Michaels, were dispensed with as Celtic put on a footballing display as close to perfection as you are likely to see. They were simply awesome and must have even surprised themselves with a performance brimming with fight, passion, determination and no little skill. In the opening minutes it was obvious to St Michaels that they had a fight on their hands to garner the points necessary to maintain their title challenge. Celtic competed for every ball and never let the Tipp side settle. Despite the all action approach from both sides there was little in the line of chances in the opening half hour although a Brian Waters free did make the Michaels's keeper work on 35 minutes. Three minutes later Celtic were ahead when Stephen Ryan headed in at the far post. Celtic were nearly two up before the break when Wack O'Donnell broke through but he lacked control at the vital moment and the ball ended up in the side netting. Celtic got the perfect start to the second half when James Walsh was caught in possession and Paul Kennedy poked the ball past the Saints keeper to make it 2-0. Celtic were in complete control at this stage with Eddie Doyle and Wack O'Donnell both coming close to a third. On 65 minutes the Saints keeper dived full length to keep out a Paul Kennedy header. A minute later he was left helpless as an Andy Cosgrave shot crashed against the underside of the bar. Celtic didn't have to wait too much longer as Brian Waters crashed home a beauty on 69 minutes to make it 3-0. St Michaels's rallied late on and James Walsh headed a consolation on 80 minutes but in truth Celtic looked comfortable throughout. No team would have matched them on Sunday. It was impossible to pick a man of the match as I have never before witnessed a game where every player was outstanding. Celtic take a bow, you were magnificent. For those absent on Sunday, you missed something special.
