Clonmel Celtic advanced to the second round of the FAI Junior Cup with what eventually turned out to be a comfortable 4-1 win over Newtown Celtic from North Tipperary. Not only had Celtic to battle against worthy opponents in Newtown, they also had the elements to contend with as a gale force wind made football difficult and also increased the likelihood of an upset. Celtic had the first opportunity on 15 minutes when an excellent Willie Maunsell cross was met by Paddy O'Donnell but his effort went wide. However Celtic were shocked on 21 minutes when Damien O'Brien headed the North Tipp side in front from a corner. Celtic's response was instant as Stephen Ryan charged forward to get on the end of a Darren Burns cross and hammer home the equaliser. Despite playing into the wind Celtic had the better of the first half as Stephen Ryan, Paddy O'Donnell and Graham Doyle all came close to giving Celtic an interval lead. However with the wind at their backs in the second half it only seemed a matter of time before Celtic went ahead as they took control. On 58 minutes Kenny O'Shea had a long-range effort saved by the Newtown keeper and 2 minutes later the keeper produced an excellent save from Paddy O'Donnell. However there was no denying O'Donnell as on 69 minutes he steered home Darren Burns cross to put Celtic ahead. Two minutes later O'Donnell was there again to head home an Ian McCallum centre to put Celtic 3-1 ahead. Celtic still kept attacking in waves as Graham Doyle had a free kick attempt saved by the Newtown keeper who was having a very busy second period. Darren Burns, whose performance on the right deserved a goal, had a great chance with 5 minutes to go when he found himself through on goal but he blazed his effort wide. In the final minute a smart pass from Graham Doyle put his brother Eddie Doyle in and he finished past the advancing keeper to leave the final score 4-1 to Clonmel Celtic. Celtic have a tough second round encounter next Sunday when they have to travel to Templemore to play North Tipperary Premier outfit Blackcastle United.
