Peake Villa 1 Clonmel Celtic 1 (Celtic win 5 4 on penalties)

A battling Clonmel Celtic just edged out Peake Villa in a pulsating cup tie in Thurles last Sunday to book a place in the Tipperary Cup semi final for the second successive year. Celtic got off to the worst possible start when they conceded a soft goal from a speculative effort from a Villa player on 3 minutes. Celtic regrouped and took the game to Villa and the tie developed into an exciting end to end tussle. On 15 minutes Eddie Doyle headed over and 12 minutes later the industrious Johnny Cagney fired over from long range. Celtic were playing some nice football but were lacking a cutting edge although Andy Cosgrave forced a save from the Villa keeper on 35 minutes. It was by no means all Celtic and just before the break Ian McCollum dived bravely to block a goal bound shot to keep Celtic in the game. Villa started the second half stronger and Kevin McGrath blocked a certain goal on 50 minutes. On 60 minutes Wayne Kiely had a shot that was deflected over as Celtic continued to search for an equaliser. With the excellent combination of Johnny Cagney and David Joyce controlling midfield and the defence superbly marshalled by Kenny O'Shea Celtic slowly began to get on top and got their reward with just 2 minutes remaining on the clock. A superb run from Andy Cosgrave was brought to a halt on the edge of the Villa box and the ball broke to Alan Ward who rifled an excellent shot that found the net via the outstretched hand of the Villa keeper. He couldn't have picked a better time to score his first goal for the club. A minute later disaster struck when Celtic keeper John Ryan was red carded for violent conduct. Villa nearly won the game in extra time when they struck a post but a gallant 10 man Celtic held out for a penalty shoot out that they won 5-4 with Johnny Cagney saving Villa's first sudden death effort and it was then left to Jason Cockburn to coolly send Celtic into the semi finals.
