Redmonstown V Clonmel Celtic

Redmonstown 1 Clonmel Celtic 5

Clonmel Celtic won their first game in the Munster Cup for the first time in three years as they overcame a very dogged Redmonstown team. The 5-1 score line may have flattered Celtic a little bit but they dug deep to beat the forth division side. Celtic were slow starting off and were put under a bit of pressure early on through the lively Redmonstown forwards. Stephen Ryan was guilty of missing a guilt edged chance as the half drew to an end after he was played in unselfishly by his strike partner Paul Kennedy, but he shot straight at the Redmonstown keeper. However the breakthrough did come before half time through the likely source of Paul Kennedy as he capitalised on a defence error to volley home to put Celtic in front. It was vital to get this goal before half time and Celtic came out in the second half a far more composed side. They extended upon their lead through former Redmonstown player Brian Waters as he expertly volleyed home from the edge of the area after a good ball from the most unlikely of sources in David Peters!! A third goal soon followed as Paul Kennedy was on hand to finish from close range after a great ball into the box from Eggy Doyle. Celtic were in the ascendancy at this stage and scored to quick goals to put the result beyond doubt. The first of which was headed home by Ross Doyle after a good ball by Paul Kennedy and a Wayne “Riise” Murray free kick finished the scoring for Celtic. Redmonstown did get a consolation goal with 10 minutes to go as some slack marking by Celtic gifted them a goal to deny Celtic their first clean sheet of the season. There is however plenty of room for improvement and a better performance is needed next week if they are going to overcome Vee Rovers in the next round of the Munster Cup.
