Clonmel Celtic's miserable record against Rock Rovers continued as they went down 1-0 to the Carrick side in Ferryhouse last Sunday morning. This defeat means that for the second successive season Celtic have a major fight on their hands to avoid relegation. The game was only minutes old when a fine ball from Wayne Gartland played Robbie Farrell in but the referee blew for a questionable offside. However things didn't get any better for Celtic and they struggled to make any impression in a dour opening period. Victory for Rock Rovers was probably more important, given their position in the league, and this was evident as the Carrick side fought hard for every ball. The only goal of he game came on 23 minutes. A Rovers midfielder was given far too much time and his ball over the Celtic defence found Michael Coady who hit a low shot across the goal to give Rock the lead. Rovers should have been two up 8 minutes later when another ball over the top saw David Peters bring down Michael Coady but for some inexplicable reason the referee gave an indirect free kick in the Celtic box. Celtic were unable to take advantage of this let off although Eddie Doyle did make the keeper work from a free kick which the Rovers custodian pushed to safety. Celtic upped the tempo in the second and they monopolised possession as Rovers defended in numbers. On 50 minutes a good ball from Wayne Gartland found Robbie Farrell on the edge of the box but he shot over. Celtic came close on 70 minutes when from Robbie Farrell's cross Paul Kennedy turned sharply but blasted over. Its a sad reflection of their play when two shots well off target was all that Celtic managed in 90 minutes. In the second half you couldn't fault Celtic for effort but their play in the final quarter was simply awful. Although Rovers did defend well Celtic never caused them any problems as they were clueless when it came to breaking them down. Celtic have four games left and will probably need to win two to stay up. This is a feat well within their capabilities but on this showing you would have to be worried. If truth be told although both sides showed plenty of endeavour the quality of football was very poor and neither side would look out of place in the first division next season.
