Clonmel Celtic maintained their unbeaten record this season with a 4-1 home victory over Rock Rovers. This win is Celtics second consecutive win against Rock Rovers in as many weeks in cup competitions and is an indication of how far this Celtic team has come this season as they had previously never beaten Rock Rovers since the club was formed in 2003. Celtic started much the stronger team and took the lead half way through the first half with a classy goal. Stephan Ryan played a delicious ball to his strike partner Paul Kennedy who clinically volleyed home from 10 yards. Celtic doubled their lead 5 minutes later when a magnificent cross by Stephen Ryan again found Paul Kennedy unmarked in the box who in turn coolly headed into the top corner to extend Celtics lead. Celtic took their foot off the accelerator as half time approached and Rock Rovers pulled a goal back with a magnificent strike from outside the box which gave John Ryan in the Celtic goal no chance. Celtic took control of the game in the second half and extended their lead with 10 minutes gone on the clock. A clearance by the defence was misjudged by the Rock rovers defence and in turn led to Paul Kennedy being pulled down in the box and Rock Rovers reduced to 10 men. Paul Kennedy slammed home the resulting penalty to claim his and Celtics third. At this stage Celtic were in cruise control and were guilty of missing a number of chances with Paul Kennedy the main culprit. Stephen Ryan got the goal his performance deserved when he latched onto Eric Canes pinpoint cross to kill off the game as a contest. Graham Doyle scored a penalty in injury time to score his first goal since coming back from his long injury lay off. Celtic can be very pleased with the performance and can hope only to build upon this win as there are still a number of key players to come back who are missing through injury.
