Clonmel Celtic 0 Rock Rovers 0 (Celtic win 3 1 on penalties)

Clonmel Celtic kept their season alive by advancing to the quarter finals of the Tipperary Cup with a penalty shoot out win over Rock Rovers. In truth Celtic shouldn’t have required penalties to win this game as they created enough chances to win it in normal time. This was never going to be an easy tie and Celtic needed a good performance to stay in this competition. Fortunately on the day they delivered and they were good value for this win. Wayne Kiely missed a great chance to put Celtic ahead in the first half but the home side had to thank keeper John Ryan who made a marvellous save to keep the game scoreless at the break. Celtic continued to look the better side in the second half and Adam McSherry and Andy Cosgrave both came close to scoring that all important goal. Unfortunately Celtic were unable to make the breakthrough and the game went to penalties. After Celtic’s last experience of a penalty shoot out in a Tipperary Cup tie supporters were a bit apprehensive. Despite the lottery of penalty kicks Celtic were boosted by having a keeper of John Ryan’s calibre in goal and successful spot kicks from Adam McSherry, Eddie Doyle and Brian Carroll saw Celtic advance 3-1.
