Rock Rovers 2 Clonmel Celtic 1

Clonmel Celtic slumped to their fourth defeat of the season going down to a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Rock Rovers. The Carrick side have shown signs of improvement of late after a slow start and they carried that form into this game as they made the brighter start. On 14 minutes Jonathan O’Mahoney got down well to deny Rock an early lead. Rock looked the more likely side in the early stages against an out of sorts Celtic who never got their passing game going. Paul Kennedy almost snatched the lead for Celtic on 29 minutes when he capitalised on a keeper error but his shot drifted wide. Rovers took the lead on 32 minutes when they powered home a free kick from just outside the box. The goal seemed to stir some life in Celtic as they upped their game and should have levelled just before the break but the usually reliant Paul Kennedy just lacked a little composure when he blazed over after good work by Paul Shanahan. Celtic continued their improvement in the second half with both Graham Doyle and Paul Shanahan both coming close with shots. However slightly against the run of play Rock went 2 up from another free kick that took a deflection that left the keeper flat footed. The goal was a cruel blow to Celtic as it seemed to breathe life into a faltering Rovers side. They again took the game to Celtic and would have killed off the game but for three great saves from the excellent Jonathan O’Mahoney. Celtic rallied again in the last 10 minutes and with just 2 minutes on the clock the hard working Paul Shanahan pulled a goal back. However it was a case of too little too late although Kenny O’Shea came desperately close in the dying seconds for what would have been an unlikely equaliser.
