Clonmel Celtic maintained their impressive start to the season with a creditable draw away to reigning champions Clonmel Town. This result, coupled with their victory over St Michaels, will give the lads the confidence to view themselves as genuine contenders for the league title this season. Celtic were slow to start last Friday night and looked very sluggish in the opening half hour. As early as the first minute John Shanahan forced Raymie Boyle into action. Town dominated midfield and Keane and Creed were proving a real handful for the Celtic defence. In the 14th minute Boyle saved with his feet from the lively Glen Keane and five minutes later Barry Kiely's shot looked goalbound until it took a deflection off a Celtic defender. Town striker , Trevor Creed then blasted over when well placed. At this stage Celtic were happy that Aaron Moroney has moved on as his presence here could have meant that Town would have been out of sight by the half hour mark. However this Celtic team are resilient battlers and they soon began to make a game of this tie. On 28 minutes a goalbound volley from James Power was deflected for a corner and five minutes later the Town keeper saved at the feet of Dino McSherry. Celtic were growing in confidence and on 36 minutes a fine cross from Willie Maunsell was narrowly headed over by McSherry. The second half saw a much more confident Celtic take the game to Town as they had a lot more of the possession. Despite dominating for periods they never really made the Town keeper work though. Mid way though the second half Paddy O'Donnell charged down the right and decided to shoot when a better option would have been to square the ball to McSherry or Power who were better placed. O'Donnell's cross later saw the keeper fumble the ball under the challenge of McSherry but Willie Maunsell failed to take advantage with an effort that went wide. It was by no means all one way traffic in the second half as Wayne Murray had to be alert to block Trevor Creed's effort as he pounced on a shot that rebounded from keeper Raymie Boyle. All in all a fair result and what is most encouraging is that you feel that this Celtic side have a lot more in them and can only get better.
