Clonmel Celtic made Clonmel Town work very hard for the point that saw them crowned league champions last Sunday as they had to rely on a late wonder strike from Tony Scully to grab a priceless draw. For the second time in a month Celtic faced a challenge from one of the big two and once again they proved they are more than a match for St Michaels and Clonmel Town, which should augur well for the future. Celtic made their intentions clear from the very start when a fine strike from Paddy O'Donnell produced a fine save from the Town keeper. Celtic looked the better of the two teams in the early stages as they never allowed Town to settle and the Paul Kennedy and Paddy O'Donnell up front were causing the Town defence some anxious moments. However on the half hour mark Town took the lead against the run of play when Tony Scully converted from the spot after Ian McCollum had mistimed his tackle. However Celtic were level 5 minutes later when following a handball, Paul Kennedy showed all the confidence of a player stroking home his 32nd goal of the season. Celtic should have been ahead at the break, after a superb piece of skill from Brian Waters saw him half volley a shot against the inside of the post. Ten minutes into the second half Brain Waters produced another piece of magic as a rocket from all of 40 yards crashed into the net of the underside of the bar for a glorious goal. For a brief second there a stunned silence, before the entire crowd warmly applauded a truly marvellous goal. As expected Town took the game to Celtic for the remaining thirty minutes but if truth be told, despite all their possession they never really threatened John Ryan's goal. You felt it would take something special to claim an equaliser and with 8 minutes remaining that duly arrived when Tony Scully turned on the edge on the box and hit a half volley to the top corner to level it at 2-2. It was an excellent effort (not quite as good as Brians) but not bad all the same! There was still time for drama in the last minutes when Celtic had very strong appeals for a penalty. Everyone makes mistakes and the referee got this one wrong. I don't know how he could adjudge that no contact was made with Danny Madigan, when the player had to leave the pitch after the incident injured and with his shinguard broken! I wonder what would have happened if the incident occurred in the other penalty box. It would seem that it is not only in the Premiership that the big clubs get the big decisions. Anyway congrats to Town, you win the league over 16 games and not just 1 so they are deserving winners. As for Celtic, its simple really, play like this for the rest of the season and they should join Town on the honours list with the Tipperary Cup a real possibility.
