Clonmel Celtic 1 Clonmel Town 6
After both club’s form in the preceding season, this opening fixture of the 2007/08 season should have been a spellbinding affair. This was not the case however, as Clonmel Town ran riot, putting six past a hapless Celtic, who only managed one in return. Celtic started well in the first half, showing good creative fluency and confidence in their ability. Many chances were created with Brian Waters, Paddy O’Donnell and Mick Saunders all going close. With Johnny Cagney dominating midfield, chances for Town were few ad far between, until the 20th minute when Tony Scully broke through but missed a one-on-one with John Ryan. Two minutes later they would rue this missed chance. Mick Saunders picked the ball up in his own half and played a 60 yard pin point ball to Brian Waters on the left flank. Brian skilfully flicked the ball over his and Darren Burns head before sending in a perfect left foot cross, which Paul Kennedy coolly headed home. With Celtic still in buoyant mood, Town punished their lack of concentration 2 minutes later, when from a soft corner, Alan Coady forced the ball home after a goal line scramble. The game suffered then with both teams afraid to venture too far forward, until the 31st minute as Tony Scully again walked through the Celtic defence, only this time he put the ball in the net to make it 2-1 to the Orangemen. The remainder of the half remained quiet with hopeful efforts from Mick Saunders and Paul Kennedy the only points of note. Most worryingly Johnny Cagney limped off the pitch at half time unable to continue due to a ferocious challenge by Raymie Condon, which resulted in both players being booked. The following 45 minutes are the worst in the clubs history. Aaron Moroney stepped up a gear in this half, looking a constant threat, first forcing a magnificent save from John Ryan. He then hit the bar, before scoring a simple finish early in the half. It was 4-1 after 67 minutes when Aaron scored with a clinical finish. Four minutes later Clonmel Town were celebrating again when Paul Scully lost Danny Madigan to head past John Ryan. With ten minutes to play Town wrapped up the scoring when Dwayne Burns finished after an error of judgement by John Landers. With this scoreline you would think Town would be happy, but not until they injured our only other impressive player in Brian Waters. Kenneth Kiely challenged him from behind with a tackle that would warrant a custodial sentence, had it taken place outside the confines of a football pitch.
