Clonmel Celtic 0 Clonmel Town 1

Clonmel Celtic bowed out of the Tipperary Cup after going down to a single goal defeat to Clonmel Town at Celtic Park last Saturday night. This eagerly awaited semi final derby failed to live up to expectations and although the commitment and effort from both sides was evident the quality was sadly lacking. As expected from a side with a lot of games under their belt recently, Town started strongly and Celtic, without a competitive game for a few weeks were slow out of the blocks. Celtic managed to avoid conceding an early goal although Tony Scully and Aaron Moroney both came close with long range efforts. Celtic did cause a stir on 10 minutes when good play on the right from Johnny Cagney and Wayne Kiely ended with a Kiely cross that Adam McSherry just failed to get on the end of. Town got the all important goal on 27 minutes when Paul Scully nodded home from close range from a corner. The same player was very lucky to stay on the pitch when from the kick off he inexplicably kicked out at Johnny Cagney. Celtic nearly got the ideal start to the second half with Adam McSherry glancing a header just wide. Celtic then had to withstand about ten minutes of Town dominance during which Tony Scully stroke a post. However having weathered this bit of Town pressure Celtic got more into the game and began to exert a bit of pressure of their own. With 10 minutes remaining they had very strong claims for a penalty when Alan Ward appeared to have been taken down by the Town keeper when played in by a smart ball from Adam McSherry. Two minutes later Celtic came very close again when the Town keeper brought off an excellent save from a Ian McCollum header. It was a brave finish by Celtic that unfortunately did not bring an equaliser and Town squeezed through to a Tipperary Cup final meeting with St Michaels. In truth this was not a derby game that will live long in the memory and one the referee will want to forget as well with 2 bad calls going against Celtic.
