Clonmel Celtic 2 Clonmel Town 4

Celtic were unable to follow up their opening day win when they went down to a 4-2 defeat to Clonmel Town at Celtic Park last Sunday. Once again Celtic started the game reasonably well but disaster struck on 12 minutes when a defensive mix up saw Ian McCollum net an own goal to give Town the lead. Although Celtic battled gamely for the remainder of the half they struggled to create any worthwhile chances and looked vunerable when Town attacked. On 40 minutes Celtic nearly levelled when Paul Kennedy forced a fine save from the Town keeper. However just on the stroke of half time Town created an opening and Tony Scully finished well to give Town a 2-0 interval lead. Amazingly within 5 minutes of te restart Celtic were level. On 47 minutes Paul Kennedy was upended in the box and he made no mistake from the spot to make it 2-1. Two minutes later Kennedy powered home a Eddie Doyle corner to make it 2-2. Town's response was instant. On 52 minutes Celtic failed to deal with a corner and Paul Scully was on hand to fire home from close range to restore Town's lead. A lively game ensued as play swung from end to end. Celtic appeared to have two claims for penalties when both Eddie Doyle and Paul Shanahan appeared to be fouled in the box. Town wrapped up the game with ten minutes remaining when David McGrath got on the end of a through ball to finish well. In fairness to Celtic they never gave up and Andy Cosgrave, Paul Shanahan and Christy Aylward all came close to getting a third for Celtic.
