Clonmel Celtic are out of the Munster Junior Cup after been beaten 2-0 by neighbours Clonmel Town at the Bypass last Sunday. Any hope of a good game of football was ruined by the gale force winds and the intermittent heavy showers which ruined the game as a spectacle. Celtic were nearly in as early as the fifth minute but Paddy O'Donnell was unable to control Stephen Ryan's through ball. On sixteen minutes following a good Town move Raymie Boyle got down well to save a John Shanahan effort. There wasn't much between the teams at this stage and there was very little in the line of goalmouth action. Town nearly broke through on 29 minutes but an excellent last ditch tackle denied Paul Scully a shot at goal. Three minutes later good work by Paddy O'Donnell and Graham Doyle saw the latter's cross cleared to Barry O'Neill and his goal bound shot was blocked with nothing resulting from the corner that followed. Town upped the tempo in the second half and gradually took control winning individual battles throughout the field. On 62 minutes they almost made the breakthrough but Tony Scully's stinging drive was expertly tipped over the bar by Raymie Boyle. However Town did take the lead seven minutes later when a Paul Scully shot from the edge of the box beat the Celtic keeper. Celtic were unable to respond. Although they defended heroically, with David Peters particularly impressive, they just did not carry any threat up front. Paddy O'Donnell, the lone striker, worked his socks off all afternoon but against a well organised Town defence he just couldn't make an impact. Town rapped up the game on 83 minutes when Ian Cleary finished after good work by Alan Coady on the right. Celtic will be hoping for a run in the Tipperary Cup but more importantly they will have to concentrate on winning at least three of their last six games to guarantee survival in the Premier League.
