Clonmel Celtic v Clonmel Town

Clonmel Celtic 0 Clonmel Town 1

Clonmel Celtic ended their season with their heads held high after an impressive display against local rivals Clonmel Town. A penalty by Michael McHugh is what separated the sides on the day, but it could have been so much better for Celtic as they missed numerous clear cut chances on the day. Town started the game more brightly and put the Celtic defence under a lot of pressure with a string of attacks but the Celtic defence held strong throughout. However a rather fortunate penalty was awarded to Clonmel Town when Paul Shanahan was brought down in the box by Stephan Ryan after he had handled the ball. The referee however pointed to the spot and Michael McHugh made no mistake to put Town 1-0 up. The remainder of the half was a rather scrappy affair and the sides went into the interval with Clonmel Town looking comfortable to go on and win the match. However Celtic came out in the second half and put Town under pressure right from the off. James Power went close with an attempted lob. John Mullins laid up Paddy O’Donnell after some great work down the left, but his shot was saved well by the Town keeper when a goal looked certain. Graham Doyle went close with a deflected free kick and John Mullins himself had a chance that narrowly went wide. It wasn’t to be Celtic’s day as Town held on for the win but the lads can be proud of their performance and let’s hope they can start next year in the same manner as they finished it this year.
