Clonmel Celtic 3 Wilderness Rovers 2

Clonmel Celtic scrapped through to the third round of the FAI Junior Cup with a hard fought 3-2 win over Wilderness Rovers last Sunday. Played in perfect conditions before a big crowd Celtic got the battle they anticipated and Rovers can feel somewhat disappointed that they did not get a result from this game. Celtic got the perfect start and were ahead after 5 minutes. A fine crossfield ball saw Danny Madigan beat the Rovers offside trap and he unselfishly laid the ball off to Eddie Doyle who stroked the ball home for a fine goal. That was as good as it got for Celtic who were on the backfoot for much of the first half against a determined Wilderness side. There was no doubt that Rovers were up for this game, winning individual battles and dominating possession. Only for a courageous last ditch tackle from Danny Madigan on 25 minutes Sean O’Hara could have been in for an equaliser. They didn’t have to wait long for the leveller however as 3 minutes later Michael O’Hara fired home following some poor defending by Celtic. On 33 minutes Rovers hit the front when once again Celtic failed to clear and Paul Cagney fired home to the delight of the visiting supporters. Celtic were rocked and following a couple of positional changes they gradually steadied themselves and for the remainder of the half enjoyed their best spell of the game. It was during this period, on 39 minutes, they equalised when once again Celtic broke down the right and when the cross came in Andy Cosgrave found himself with time to control the ball and shoot home to make it 2-2. Just before the break Celtic almost went ahead when Paddy ‘Wack’ O’Donnell raced through but his effort was well saved. Rovers started the 2nd half on the attack and hit the bar with their first effort. The game developed into a real derby scrap with Rovers giving as good as they got. What proved to be the winner arrived on 60 minutes when John Mullins beat the offside trap and he found himself with plenty of time and space to finish well and put Celtic in front. However Celtic had to desperately hang on as Paul Cagney forced a fine save from John Ryan on 65 minutes and 6 minutes later he shot inches wide. Celtic showed determination and grit to hold on a win what was always going to be a difficult game. On this evidence if Wilderness can maintain this level of performance it is more than likely that these two teams will meet more often in league games in a couple of years time.
