TOPIC:
Girls triumph
It was a great weekend for Clonmel Celtic Ladies as they advanced to the semi finals of the Women’s Junior Challenge Cup with an excellent 2-1 win over Fanad Utd FC from Donegal. Celtic got the perfect start when Jade Looby gave them an early lead. The same player doubled Celtic’s advantage just after the break as Celtic raced into a 2-0 lead. The Donegal side did get one back late on but Celtic held on for a precious victory largely thanks to Maeve Murphy who had a great game in goal for Celtic. This was an impressive performance by Celtic with Louise Burke, in her first outing since last September, putting in an outstanding display with woman of the match Jade Looby also excellent. The Ladies would like to thank their supporters who turned up in large numbers and also all the girls who recently participated in Bag packing fundraising event.

Kenny back at the helm
Kenny OShea has been re-appointed as manager of Clonmel Celtic FC. He will be assisted in his role by Karl Condon. Kenny was manager of Celtic when we had our best ever season in 2006/2007 when we reached the Tipperary Cup final and were in contention for league honours right up to the end of that campaign. Kennys reign in charge ended in controversy at the start of this season when Celtic went down to a heavy opening day defeat to Clonmel Town. The aftermath following this result has been well documented but we can say that the club has learned alot and recovered well to finish the season in a comfortable mid table position. Hopefully under the guidance of Kenny and Karl the club can now progress and become more of a threat next year. Karl of course has managed Celtic and St Olivers Boys before and had a very successful stint in charge. With a bit of luck the combination of two of Clonmel Celtics more successful managers will be the start of exciting times for the club.

South Tipperary finish 12th
South Tipperary finished in 12th position in the recent Kennedy Cup competition in Limerick. After been very unfortunate not to progress in their group (lost out to a toss of a coin) South Tipperary went on to beat Galway in the Bowl competition but were beaten in the next round by Wexford and lost out in the game for 11th position to Drogheda. The club would once again like to congratulate the Clonmel Celtic representative, Rohan Khan, who played a prominent role in for the South Tipperary squad in this competition.

Kennedy Cup update
The Tipperary Schoolboys are involved in Kennedy Cup action in Limerick this week with club secretary Tony Acheson assistant manager to the County Squad. The club also has under 14 player Rohan Khan included in the County Squad. Its difficult to believe that after going through their group unbeaten and without conceding a goal Tipperary still failed to advance. In their first game Tipperary beat North Tipperary 4-0. Rohan Khan featured in this game but was withdrawn with a slight injury. In their second game they drew 0-0 with Limerick County before going on to win their final group game 2-0 against Limerick District with Rohan Khan getting one of the goals. Tipperary finished the group tied with Limerick County but lost out in a toss up. They will now face Galway in the Bowl competition.

Under 14s hit 9
Clonmel Celtic under 14s advanced to the semi final of the Tipperary Cup when they thrashed Vee Rovers 9-1 last night. Among the goals for Celtic were Stevie OConnell (2), Evan Hickey (2), Ashley Keane, Gerard Green, Alex Harte and Michael Noonan. Unfortunately the under 13s were on the wrong end of a thrashing when they went down 6-0 to Clonmel Town on Tuesday night. Celtic were always going to find it hard against Town but the absence of 4 key players made it very difficult for Celtic despite them being in the game up to half time when they trailed by just a goal.

Celtic up against it
Despite home advantage Celtic will go into Saturday nights Tipperary Cup semi final against Clonmel Town (6.45 k.o) as big outsiders. Celtic have a poor record against Town although it has improved somewhat in recent seasons (if we can ignore THAT game at the start of the season). From a position a few years ago when we couldnt even score against them we have managed a few draws (and goals) in recent encounters. The timing of the game doesnt help Celtic as we have had not a competitive game in weeks (see previous story Same Old Story) whereas our opponents have been playing competitive games twice a week recently. However lets hope for one big effort on Saturday night and who knows with a bit of luck we may surprise a few and reach our second Cup final in two years.

TOPIC:
Same old story
Once again we are faced with the same predictable end to the TSDL Premier League. All teams, with the exception of Town and Michaels, have one game left. The Banshas, Rovers, Celtics and Uniteds etc etc have been idle now for a few weeks waiting for their final game. When their final game does eventually come around we end up with a mismatch i.e. an understrength team with nothing to play for, already in summer holiday mode, against a strong Town or Michaels side pushing for the title. The result is obvious. The league no doubt has lined up Michaels v Town game as the final game of the season. It is obvious both teams will win their remaining games to set up this big showdown. Is this good for the league? A load of meaningless games at the end of the season for the sake of one big game with the title to play for? Why does the league find itself in this situation every year? We are all aware of the fact that their involvement in National competitions (including Oscar Traynor) mean Town and Michaels have more games than most every season and there is an evitable backlog but the league needs to make some effort to squeeze extra games in during the autumn and winter to avoid this farce every year. It is simply not good for the league. A perfect example sums up this dilemma i.e. Clonmel Town v Peake Villa. When these 2 sides met in Thurles earlier in the league both teams arguably still could win the league and what resulted was a competitive game with Villa edging it 1-0. What happened when the teams met again in Clonmel a week ago? Town, with the league in their sights, came up against a Villa side already on holidays and the result was inevitable i.e. 8-0 to Town. The TSDL needs to wake up before it is too late.

The u11's put in a very good performance to get a 0-0 draw away to St Michaels on Saturday. Our under 10s were involved in a soccer blitz on Sunday with Peake Villa and Clerihan. Although the results did not go our way, we played well in the games against Clerihan and Peake Villa with goals from Alan Acheson and Shane Fitzgerald. Big win for 14s
The under 14s had a convincing 6-0 win over Cashel Town last Saturday morning. A wonder strike from John Keogh put Celtic on their way to a well deserved win. The Kilsheelan contingent played a prominent part in this victory with both Adrian McGuire and Alex Hatre adding goals before the break. Michael Lynch and Jeff Jones were controlling midfield with intelligent use of the ball while Michael Lynch impressed at the back. Despite playing into the wind in the second half Celtic remained on top with Rohan Kahn, Michael Noonan and Conor Acheson all adding goals to see Celtic complete a successful mornings work. Celtic leave it late
Three goals in the last 12 minutes saw Clonmel Celtic eventually overcome the challenge of Cahir to claim their first 3 points of 2008. It was 1-1 at the break with Ian McCollum netting for Celtic after just 2 minutes. Celtic missed chance after chance in the 2nd half and just when it looked as if they were going to pay for these missed Adam McSherry arrived at the far post to fire home Wayne Gartland's cross. Kenny O'Shea and Paddy 'Wack' O'Donnell added 2 more as Celtic ran riot in the last 10 minutes.

I suppose this could be termed your typical meaningless end of season clash between two mid table sides save from the drop and well out of the hunt for honours. Interestingly 15 of Celtics 17 points have come against the teams below them, i.e. Borris, Cahir and Galbally. Celtic v Rovers
Clonmel Celtic are back in action this weekend when they entertain Rock Rovers in the 3rd round of the Tipperary Cup where a place in the quarter finals awaits the winners. Last year Celtic beat Rovers in the semi finals before going on to a surprise defeat in the final to St Michaels B. Up until last year Celtics record against the Carrick side had been poor but a couple of league and cup wins last term addressed this disappointing statistic. This year the sides have met twice in the league. In August a very understrength Celtic lost 4-1 in Carrick while very recently Celtic let a two goal lead slip to draw 3-3. Its very hard to call this game as it can go anyway. If Celtic have a full strength team and are up for it on the day they should edge it. However anything less than a fully committed effort will see our season end on Sunday.

Finishing line in sight?
The B team are in league action against Hollyford on Sunday. With 4 games to play 1 win could see Celtic claim promotion. However having got this far not been able to add the Division 3 title to the Shield would be a disappointment. The Division 3 title now looks as if it is a two horse race between us and St Kierans. With an away fixture against St Kierans on the horizon it is important that Celtic keep the pressure on by continuing to collect points. Celtics only league defeat of the season was on the opening day against Hollyford but the Tipp have slipped since then and Celtic should claim another significant win on Sunday.

5 star Celts
Clonmel Celtic maintained their position at the top of Division 3 with an impressive 5-1 win over Cullen Lattin in Ferryhouse last Sunday. Aware that dropped points could be very significant at this stage of the season Celtic made the perfect start when a Paddy O'Donnell double had them 2-0 up after 10 minutes. Celtic have been impressive of late and finding the net regularly. They did get a slight scare before the break though when Shane Prenderville pulled a goal back before to make it 2-1 at half time. Celtic restored their two goal advantage on the hour mark when Wayne Gartland scored. They made the game safe twelve minutes later when John Shoer scored a fine solo effort. The best however was saved until last when Jockie Landers fired home a superb shot off the underside of the bar to make the points safe for Celtic.

Celtic 3 Mullinahone 0
Clonmel Celtic B went back to the top of Division 3 with a comfortable 3-0 win over Mullinahone. There were few chances in the first half although Celtic were in control throughout. Celtic had a great chance to take the lead when they won a penalty after 10mins but Paddy O Donnell failed to convert. In the second half Celtic remained in control and in the 58th min went 1-0 up with an unstoppable 30 yard Adam McSherry free kick. After going 1-0 up Celtic created chance after chance with Paddy ODonnell & John Shoer both coming close. The second & third goals in the 64th & 75th were similar, with some good running off the ball from Johnny Walshe as he got beyond the Mullinahone defence and slotted home on both occasions. B's aiming for top spot
As we approach the business end of the league its all to play for in Division 3 with Celtic in a challenging position. On Sunday we entertain Mullinahone aware that any dropped points at this stage of the season could prove fatal. With tough away games against Hollyford and St Kierans to come its important that Celtic pick up all points on offer at home. This means that Sunday's clash with Mullinahone is a must win game. It won't be easy as Mullinahone still have a chance of being involved in the promotion shake up and have already beaten Celtic in Clonmel in a Shield game earlier in the season. However you would be confident that Celtic can get their run in off to a winning start with three points on Sunday.

Adam McSherry was again on target for Celtic with a double with Eddie Doyle scoring the game's first goal.(See Reports Section).

Good point for B team
In the third division Clonmel Celtic B would have been more pleased with the point they picked up in a 0-0 draw away to leaders Kilsheelan Utd. Celtic started this game well and after 20 minutes a priceless victory looked on the cards. However Kilsheelan improved as the game went on and indeed they probably had the better chances to win the game in the second half. The point keeps Celtic on course to strongly challenge for the Division 3 title.

Good win for 14s
Clonmel Celtic gained a good 2-1 victory over St.Michaels in the league on Saturday. The game started evenly with both defences looking solid and neither team had that many chances. Half-way through the first half the game started to open up with Jeff Joness well struck shot hitting the cross-bar. St.Michaels also had a few decent chances. The teams went in 0-0 at half time. The second half started brightly for Celtic and after a few minutes Kevin Larkin headed home a Jeff Jones corner from close range. Celtic were put under considerable pressure but Ashley Keane and Eoin OConnor coped exceptionally well at the back. Celtic doubled their lead mid-way through the second half when Kevin Larkin set up Ashley Keane for a 40 yard volley which flew over the keeper's head. St.Michaels kept the pressure up requiring some tenacious tackling from Ashley Keane. With five minutes remaining Celtic conceeded a penalty that was converted and set up a nervous ending for Celtic. St.Michaels kept the pressure up but Celtic held out for a well deserved victory.

Celtic hope to guarantee survival
Although it would take a very unlikely set of results to see Celtic dragged into trouble again victory against Rock Rovers at home on Sunday will put an end to any possible lingering doubts. With fours games left Celtic will be hoping to garnish as many points as possible to finish the season on a high a maintain momentum for a cup run. They wont have it easy against a Rock Rovers side that before last season we had a terrible record against. Earlier this season a weakened and disjointed Celtic lost 4-1 in Carrick but expect it to be a much tighter affair this Sunday. Rock are riding high at the moment and have enjoyed a good return to the Premier Division but if Celtic see the Tipperary Cup as a realistic target this is the kind of game where they should demonstrate their true credentials. However the big game of the day is the top of the table clash between Celtic B and current leaders Kilsheelan Utd. Under John Larkin Kilsheelan have improved dramatically and have become a force in this division. A victory for Celtic would see them take a giant step towards promotion although a draw would not be a bad result.

Adam makes significant impact
In what has been a very tough season for Clonmel Celtic one shining light was the signing of Adam McSherry in October last year. Despite only signing three months ago he is already Clonmel Celtics leading scorer on 8 goals and he has been instrumental in some vital wins that dragged Celtic away from the relegation zone. He has also had a huge impact on the B team guiding them to a Shield victory with a masterly display and 2 goals in the final. Without in any way trying to take away from the efforts of all the players involved I think many would join me in saying thanks to Adam for helping turn our season around!!

B team climb to 2nd
Clonmel Celtic B enjoyed a comfortable 4-1 win over neighbours Redmonstown that takes them to within 1 point of leaders Kilsheelan Utd with games in hand. Celtic were well on top throughout but despite their dominance they couldn't find a breakthrough in the first half. They continued to remain on top in the second half and got their reward when Jockie Landers continued his impressive goal scoring this season with the opener on 60 minutes. Once they got in front they never looked back and the impressive Paddy 'Wack' O'Donnell took advantage of hesitancy in the Redmonstown defence to clinically fire home Celtic's second on 65 minutes. Five minutes later Celtic sealed the win when good interplay between Wayne Gartland and Paddy O'Donnell ended with Gary Tobin's cross come shot deceiving the keeper to make it 3-0. Aidan O'Brien pulled one back for Redmonstown on 75 minutes with a fine shot low to the corner. However any hope of a Redmonstown revival was quickly dashed with another excellent finish from Paddy 'Wack' O'Donnell to give Celtic an impressive 4-1 win.

Third time lucky?
For the third successive weekend Clonmel Celtic will attempt to reach the third round of the Tipperary Cup when they face third division Cullen Lattin. The weather has seen the postponement of this game for the last two weeks due to the bad weather. For some unknown reason the club has lost home advantage (Its not as if Lattin is in a different climatic zone!). Celtic should still be strong enough to advance but will have to be a little more cautious now that they are on the road. Meanwhile the B team will be hoping to strengthen their challenging position at the top of Division 3 when they entertain neighbours Redmonstown. There is also an attractive game on Saturday when the under 13s will have it all to do against Clonmel Town.

Tipperary Cup
Its still hard to even mention the Tipperary Cup as it brings up the heartbreak of last season when we came desperately close to winning the competition. This Sunday thoughts return to this competition as we play third division strugglers Cullen Lattin at Celtic Park with an 11am k.o. in the second round. We were quite fortunate with our draws last season in the Tipperary Cup and we should be strong enough to get over the first hurdle this weekend. Celtic will be anxious to get back to winning ways having lost three consecutive games on a 2-1 scoreline. However we should note that this competition doesnt always respect favourites as we learned to our cost in last years final so a professional approach and a good performance is what we are looking for on Sunday. Meanwhile the B team, with games in hand, will be hoping to close the gap on Division 3 leaders Kilsheelan Utd, when they entertain Mullinahone this Sunday at 3pm. 13s fight back to earn draw
Clonmel Celtic came from two goals down to earn a well deserved point against Cahir park on Saturday . Both teams deserve credit for a very exciting game played on a very wet and cold day . It took Celtic a long time to get into this game , with Cahir outplaying us at times with some nice passing football . Cahir took a deserved lead in the first half when Celtic failed to deal with a cross from the right wing and Sam Goodwin had the misfortune to put his attempted clearance into his own goal . Celtic were not without their chances and Johnny Higgens and Michael Doyle came close to equalising for Celtic. Facing a strong wind and driving rain , Celtic struggled to get into the game in the first half . This seemed all the less likely in the second half when Cahir got a second goal shortly after the restart . Celtic to their credit did not give up and came close to getting a goal back when Sean Tobin just failed to connect at the back post with a cross by Johnny Higgins .Celtic now had the advantage of the weather conditions and pressed cahir with attack after attack . The breakthrough came when Sam Goodwins free kick hit the crossbar and fell to the feet of johnny Higgins who made no mistake in getting celtic back into the game . We pressed and pressed for the equaliser and with 30seconds remaining Philip Quirke hit an unstoppable shot from the edge of the cahir penalty area to give Celtic a much deserved point . Well done to both sets of players for a very compelling game in very difficult conditions , and well done to all the Celtic players for not giving up and pushing themselves to the final whistle .

Big test for Celtic
Clonmel Celtic travel to Cork this Saturday aiming to reach the 6th round of the FAI Junior Cup. By co-incidence Celtic met Grattan at this same stage of the competition last season when they lost 3-2 in Clonmel after extra time. The result that day was definitely influenced by the fact that Celtic were without five players, top scorer Paul Kennedy, Graham Doyle, Danny Madigan, Andy Cosgrave and John Ryan were all absent. Circumstances have changed quite a lot since last year. Grattan went on to reach the quarter finals of the competition and were also crowned Cork AUL champions. By all accounts they remain a very strong outfit and indeed suggestions are that they have in fact improved since we last met. Celtic, by contrast have underwent quite a change since last year. Having lost some players we had a poor start to the season although with one or two recent good signings we have improved considerably and have become very competitive. Whether we have improved to an extent to get a result on Saturday remains to be seen but we are well capable of putting in a big performance. We will travel as underdogs but if all our players are available and we can perform to our potential we may cause the Cork side some problems. We have just received news that this game will be played in Blarney on an All Weather pitch as Grattan's pitch is unplayable.

Celtic top at Christmas??
Celtic’s recent good form will be put to the test this Sunday when they travel to near neighbours, Clonmel Town in the only Premier League game this weekend. Victories against the likes of Wilderness, Arra Rovers, Borris and Galbally Utd are well and good but we should be able to gauge how much Celtic have improved when they lock horns with Town at 11am this Sunday. We all remember the aftermath of Celtic’s last clash with Town when we went down to a humiliating 6-1 defeat on the first day of the season. This followed 2 league draws with Town last season where we were more than a match for the current champions. While we don’t expect to avenge our opening day loss we will be hoping that we can make this a very difficult encounter for Town. With only 1 defeat in their last 9 games Celtic will be confident going into this game. Amazingly if Celtic do manage to win they will find themselves top of the league at Christmas. Now who would have thought that in September? Meanwhile the B team are in action on the 27th December when they will be expected to advance to the 3rd round of the Peter O’Reilly Cup at the expense of newboys Ballyneale.

Clonmel Celtic play a rescheduled league game against Galbally Utd this Sunday due to the last week’s postponement of the FAI Junior Cup game between Grattan and Park Utd where Celtic are down to meet winners.
