Season 2008 - 09

DATE: 21/11/08

TOPIC: A real test

One of the benchmarks of a satisfactory season is to reach the open stages of the FAI Junior Cup. This Sunday Celtic face their first big test this season when they attempt to reach the last 64 open draw when they travel to North Tipperary to take on Nenagh Town. Celtic’s record against North Tipperary teams in this competition has not been bad; in fact they are unbeaten, although they did go out on two occasions following penalty shoot outs i.e. Cormackstown in 2004 and Cloughjordan in 2005. They beat Nenagh Celtic in 2003, Newtown Celtic and Blackcastle in 2004 and overcame Arra Rovers on penalties last year. With the exception of Newtown in 2004 when they won 4-1 all the other games have been very close with three been decided on penalties and single goal wins over Nenagh Celtic (1-0 aet) and Blackcastle (2-1). Make no doubt about it Celtic will probably have to produce their best performance this season to progress. Nenagh are reigning Premier Champions, currently league leaders and with home advantage will probably start as favourites. This is too close to call but we do need a huge performance from the lads. They can do it. Don’t be at all surprised if the game is decided on penalties.

TOPIC: Kennedy on the mark again

It probably won’t come as a huge surprise to hear Celtic star striker was on the mark twice as the TSDL won their Oscar Traynor tie 6-0 against West Waterford/East Cork last Sunday. Well done Paul, lets hope he can find the net this Sunday.

DATE: 17/11/08

TOPIC: Bs climbs to 2nd

In a division that is still taking shape Clonmel Celtic B moved to within 1 point of the leaders with a stunning first half performance against Vee Rovers. An individual effort from Paddy ‘Wack’ O’Donnell had Celtic 1 up after 4 minutes and the same player scored his second six minutes later. Celtic were dominant at this stage and his was no surprise they got a third with the best goal of the day on 20 minutes. Paul Landers picked the ball up and ran unchallenged before hitting a fine effort to put Celtic in command. Vee continued to struggle and a low well placed shot from Fergus Holohan had Celtic 4 up on 35 minutes. Just before the break they completed the scoring when Darren O’Donnell broke down the right and his shot found the net to put Celtic into an unassailable 5-0 half time lead. Celtic made some changes at the break and Vee improved and though they got one back on 60 minutes the game was well and truly over as Celtic went through the motions in the second half to run out 5-1 winners. Celtic Starman: Darren O’Donnell

TOPIC: Bs travel to Vee

The B team are back in action this weekend when they travel to Clogheen to play Vee Rovers. The second Division this year is one of the tightest in years with only 4 points between top and bottom. Victory Sunday could see the lads climb to second while defeat could see them propping up the table come Sunday night.

DATE: 13/11/08

TOPIC: Kennedy called up

It comes as no real surprise to hear that Paul Kennedy has been called up to the TSDL squad for their first Oscar Traynor clash of the season against West Waterford/East Cork with the game to be played in Cappoquin. We wish Paul the best of luck in a game where 3 points are important for the TSDL,

DATE: 12/11/08

TOPIC: Cup draws

Celtic have been given a tough draw in the FAI Junior Cup as they will have to travel to player North Tipperary Premier League Leaders Nenagh Celtic. The draw was also made for the Tipperary Cup with Celtic drawn at home to Moyglass Utd while the B team will play away to Cahir Park B.

DATE: 11/11/08

TOPIC: Celtic made fight

Sunday’s FAI Junior Cup tie against Dundrum had all the ingredients for a cup shock. The game was played in terrible conditions, Celtic were missing players and Dundrum had a 100% record in Division 4. Indeed for quite some time it looked as if an upset was on the cards and had an effort that hit the Celtic bar been inches lower Celtic could well be out of the FAI Junior Cup. Fortunately Celtic came good in the end as goals from Paul Shanahan, Paul Kennedy and Andy Cosgrave saw them through. (See Reports Section).

DATE: 10/11/08

TOPIC: Bridge shock Michaels

Old Bridge caused the shock of the weekend when they beat leaders St Michaels 3-1. This result all but hands the Premier League title to Clonmel Town. Two weeks ago Bridge looked in serious relegation trouble but this result following their 5-2 win away to Bansha last week sees them climb to the mid table safety. It also means the runner up spot is up for grabs between Michaels, Villa, Celtic and possibly the Bridge if they can continue their recent impressive form.

DATE: 09/11/08

TOPIC: Schoolboys beaten

It was a bad weekend for our schoolboys as both our under 14s and 16s were beaten. Our under 16s were 1-1 at half time with Cahir Park with Taylor Duffy on the scoresheet for Celtic but Cahir ran out 5-1 winners in the end. Our under 14s also went down by 4 as they lost 6-2 to St Michaels with Conor Acheson and Rohan Khan getting the goals for Celtic.

DATE: 07/11/08

TOPIC: Re-arranged fixture

Clonmel Celtic's re-arranged FAI Junior Cup tie with Dundrum Utd will take place this Sunday at 2pm. For a preview of this game please refer to an earlier news item. Meanwhile in what is becoming a very tight Division 2 the B team have a tough fixture away to St Kierans.

TOPIC: Poland tickets

Anyone looking for tickets for Ireland's friendly against Poland on November 19th should contact John Power before 5pm on Friday November 7th.

TOPIC: Cummins win contract

J.N Cummins & Co Ltd, Industrial Security Fencing Contractors have won the contract to erect security fencing around our All Weather pitch. Clonmel Celtic were awarded Recreational and Amenities grants from both South Tipperary County Council and Clonmel Borough Council that has made this project possible. The contractor hopes to start work this week.

TOPIC: 15s come up short

Clonmel Celtic under 15s went down to a narrow 1-0 defeat to neighbours Clonmel Town last Saturday. Celtic went down to an early scrappy goal and despite creating a lot of chances in the 2nd half they couldn't force an equaliser.

DATE: 30/10/08

TOPIC: Celtic need to be wary

Clonmel Celtic are back in action this weekend when they travel to Ballydine to play Dundrum in the FAI Junior Cup 4th round. One of the benchmarks of a satisfactory season is progressing to the open draw (last 64) of the FAI Junior Cup. Travelling to new locations and playing teams never encountered before adds excitement to the season. Clonmel Celtic have to win two more games to reach this stage starting with a tricky assignment away to Fourth Division pacesetters Dundrum Utd. On paper Celtic will be favourites but Celtic need to be very wary. Dundrum Utd are only a fourth division team in name. They are in this division simply because they are new to the TSDL and the fact they have a 100% record suggests they are a lot stronger than a fourth division outfit. They will really looking forward to this encounter and will use it as a measure of how strong they are. Celtic could be in for a difficult afternoon.

DATE: 26/10/08

TOPIC: 14s advance

The under 14s advanced in the National Cup last Saturday with a 2-1 win away to Dean Celtic from Castlecomber in Kilkenny. This was a close game played in very inclement conditions with all the goals coming in the second half. Celtic hit the front through Conor Acheson but were pegged back by the Kilkenny side. Jamie Cronin proved the hero of the day hitting the winner that sets up a 3rd Round South Eastern area tie at home to Gorey Rangers (Wexford) or Ormond Villa (Kilkenny). The team was very impressed by Dean Celtic’s facilities and also very much appreciated the hospitality shown to them on the day. The under 15s have also been drawn to play away to Dean Celtic with this game scheduled for mid November. This Saturday the 15s play host to Clonmel Town.

TOPIC: B team reach Shield final

Congratulations to the B team who have reached their second successive Shield Final. The 2007 Division 3 winners travelled to St Kierans as underdogs but they earned an excellent 1-0 win to set up a final clash with Ballingarry next weekend. It was a very tight game with Celtic having more of the possession in the first half although St Kierans hit the bar and Tevor Cloona cleared off the line. It was much of the same in the second half with nothing between the teams until Paddy O'Donnell capitalised on a keeper error on 75 minutes to win it for Celtic. O'Donnell nearly wrapped it up for Celtic when he hit the post moments later but a second goal wasn't required as Celtic hung on. This was a great team effort with Jockie Landers particularly outstanding for Celtic.

DATE: 19/10/08

TOPIC: Celtic scrape home

It was unconvincing but three points nonetheless as Celtic scraped home in awful conditions last Sunday. Second half goals from Andy Cosgrave and a David Joyce goal following a keeper error see Celtic join Town in third place following this 2-1 win over Rosegreen.(See Reports Section)

DATE: 17/10/08

TOPIC: Back to league action

After a break of 2 weeks it’s back to league action this weekend when Clonmel Celtic entertain strugglers Rosegreen Rangers at 12pm at Celtic Park. Celtic have won their last 3 games but apart from the boost of these victories their performances have still been a bit ‘dodgy’. They will have to be on their guard this Sunday as they face a Rosegreen still fresh from their first league win and desperate for more points. Celtic have already won 6-2 in Rosegreen but that victory was only assured late on with a flurry of late goals. With other sporting commitments and injuries Celtic will be a missing a few but still it would be a huge disappointment if they don’t collect all three points this Sunday.

DATE: 16/10/08

TOPIC: Jury still out on B team

I suppose you could say that after an inconsistent start to the season the jury is still out on the B team. They are nicely placed (as you could nearly say for all 8 teams!) to challenge in the league and they face a huge game this weekend that will give us a much better idea of how good they are. They travel to Cahir to play St Kierans for a place in the Division 2 Shield final. Having won the Division 3 Shield last year it would be a great achievement if they could follow that up with another Shield this year. However they could not face a tougher test than an away semi final to current leaders St Kierans.

TOPIC: Praise for Darren

There was a very nice accolade to former player and close associate of the club Darren Murray in the programme for Ireland’s recent World Cup qualifier against Cyprus. It began by saying that ‘football runs through Darren’s veins’. His father Fred ran Clonmel Celtic!!!, his mother is treasurer and brother Wayne is captain of the current Premier side while another brother has 11 years experience of professional football in England. It then went on the chart Darren’s rise as a football coach up to his current position of FAI Development Officer for the South East region. It was a very nice article and everyone at the club is happy that Darren got the publicity and recognition he deserves. Well done Darren.

DATE: 13/10/08

TOPIC: Kennedy hat trick sends Celtic through

A second half hat trick from Paul Kennedy helped Clonmel Celtic overcome the awkward challenge of Old Bridge in the FAI Junior Cup first round last Sunday. The game was level 1-1 at the break with Craig Condon netting Celtic's equaliser after 38 minutes. Despite being second best for much of the second half it was Paul Kennedy's goals again that were enough to separate the sides. (See Reports Sction).

DATE: 12/10/08

TOPIC: Mixed luck for schoolboys

It was National Cup weekend for our under 14s and under 16s and both had contrasting experiences. The under 16s can count themselves unlucky to lose 2-1 to Crusaders of Waterford after extra time. Gerard Green got Celtic's goal but lady luck wasn't on their side as they hit the woodwork twice. The under 14s advanced in the under 14 National Cup with a 4-3 win away to Peake Villa. Jamie Cronin (2), Brian Walsh and Rohan Khan were Celtic's scorers.

DATE: 09/10/08

TOPIC: Celtic & Bridge lock horns again

Clonmel Celtic face a tough FAI Junior Cup challenge this Sunday when they take on Old Bridge. With the sides also due to meet again in the Munster Junior Cup we can look forward to a fascinating series of games. There is never anything between these teams when they meet as evidenced by a recent league meeting that saw Celtic squeeze a 3-2 win. With the league out of reach Celtic will be hoping to salvage something from this season. They will be looking to advance from the area in both the FAI and Munster Junior while having a real go at the Tipperary Cup. Old Bridge will prove a major obstacle in both cups (and don’t bet against us drawing them in the Tipperary Cup) and it’s really too tight to call a result on Sunday. With back to back wins Celtic couldn’t pick a better time to make it 3 wins on trot after a very inconsistent start to the season.

DATE: 07/10/08

TOPIC: Celtic break record

Sunday’s 7-0 win over Borris was Clonmel Celtic’s biggest win since their formation. Their previous best was 6-0 wins over Cullen Lattin in the 2003-04 season and Rosegreen Rangers in the 2004-05 season. It is also only the second time they have scored 7 goals in the game. They also managed this in 2007 when they won 7-2 away to Borris. Kenny O’Shea’s hat trick sees him move into second place in the scoring charts with 5 goals just 4 behind leading scorer Paul Kennedy. (I bet Paul can sleep at night with worry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

DATE: 06/10/08

TOPIC: O'Shea hits 2nd half hat trick

A second half hat trick from substitute Kenny O’Shea saw Clonmel Celtic romp to a 7-0 win to reach the third round of the Munster Junior Cup. Celtic were 2-0 up at the break with goals from David Joyce and Graham Doyle. Unfortunately Paul Kennedy had to retire with an injury which saw Kenny O’Shea introduced to devastating effect. Further goals from David Joyce and Eddie Doyle saw Celtic easily advance. (See Reports Section).

DATE: 05/10/08

TOPIC: Mixed weekend for schoolboys

It was a mixed weekend for the schoolboys as both the under 15s and 16s played away to Clerihan. The under 15s had a convincing 5-1 win with Michael Doyle (2), Rory Doyle, Conor Acheson and Johnny Higgins on the mark for Celtic. The under 16s can count themselves unlucky to go down 2-1 to Clerihan with Gerard Kennedy on the mark for Celtic.

DATE: 02/10/08

TOPIC: Munster Junior Cup

After collecting three valuable league points this weekend Celtic turn their attention to the Munster Junior Cup when they entertain 1st Division Borris at home this Sunday. Borris were relegated from the Premier last year and beat Killusty 3-0 to set up a meeting with Celtic. Celtic’s form has been inconsistent of late but if they perform to their capabilities they should be strong enough to advance. Celtic have won their last 4 encounters with Borris and provided they are properly focused they should extend this to 5.

DATE: 30/09/08

TOPIC: Rangers shock Bridge

Rosegreen Rangers gave themselves a fighting chance of survival with a crucial 3-2 win over Oldbridge. This result has dragged the Bridge back into trouble with only 1 point now separating the bottom 3. Rock Rovers continued their climb away from the danger zone with a creditable 2-2 draw against high flying Peake Villa. The two dropped points by Villa saw St Michaels regain top spot after a 5-0 rout of Cahir Park.

DATE: 29/09/08

TOPIC: Kennedy brace keeps Celtic 4th

Paul Kennedy maintained his impressive scoring rate with a double that helped Celtic to a 3-1 win over Bansha Celtic. Celtic fell behind in the 20th minute but an Eddie Doyle goal and a penalty from Paul Kennedy had Celtic ahead at the break. Kennedy powered home a marvellous header to seal an important win for Celtic (See Match Reports).

DATE: 28/09/08

TOPIC: First league win for Bs

The B team collected their first win of the season and in doing so have put themselves back in the frame in a tight division. Killusty were the visitors to Ferryhouse and they hit the front on 25 minutes with a freak og. Celtic battled back and Paul Wynne capitalised on a keeper error to level the game. Celtic were in front on 43 minutes when Fergus Holohan beat the offside trap to finish well. There was an exciting start to the second half with a Fergus Holohan overhead kick (46) and a fine strike from Jockie Landers (47) putting Celtic into a commanding 4-1 lead. However David Conway hit back 2 minutes later to keep Killusty in the game. On 70 minutes they got themselves right back into the match when David Conway converted from the spot to make it 4-3. Although they never came under any sustained pressure there were a few anxious moments for Celtic and there was huge relief on 84 minutes when Paul Landers made the game save for Celtic as they ran out 5-3 winners.

DATE: 27/09/08

TOPIC: 15s thrashed

It was a bad weekend for our under 15s as they went down to an 8-2 defeat to Cahir with Adam O’Dwyer and Stephen Guiry on the mark for Celtic.

DATE: 25/09/08

TOPIC: Celtic reach half way point

After Sunday Celtic will have completed half our league games. That’s right, just over a month into a 9 month league season we have half our games played! Surely the fixture secretary has some questions to answer rather than constantly pandering to the big two. We live in a democracy; there are more than 2 teams in the TSDL so please stop scheduling fixtures to suit these two. Celtic will host Bansha this Sunday in a game that has taken on added significance following last Sunday’s debacle in Carrick. A win here would be a major confidence boost and would again lift us to the comforts of mid table. However lets make no mistake about it, defeat could see us dragged into a relegation scrap. This will be a tough game for Celtic who haven’t picked up a single point from their home games to date. Bansha are a decent side as evidenced by a very good 1-1 draw away to St Michaels that has more or less handed the title to Town. Lets hope with get a good reaction from last Sunday’s game and with the return of one or two players Celtic has the potential to eventually come good at home. The B team will go in search of their first win with a home game against Killusty.

DATE: 24/09/08

TOPIC: Best of luck to Conor

The club would like to send best wishes to under 14 player Conor Acheson who embarks on an exciting adventure this weekend. On Thursday Conor will travel to the UK where he will have trials with Championship outfit Reading. Conor will eventually be hoping to add his name to the growing list of Irish players at the Madjeski Stadium. Being asked to go for a trial is a major accolade in itself. Lets hope Conor enjoys the experience and has a great time.

DATE: 22/09/08

TOPIC: Villa go top

Peake Villa are back on top of the TSDL after a 4-0 win over Old Bridge. They managed this due to St Michaels dropping a vital 2 points at home to Bansha in a 1-1 draw. Meanwhile Cahir breathed life into their fight to avoid the drop with a crucial 3-2 over Rosegreen. Rosegreen at this stage looks odds on for a return to Division 1 but the second relegation spot could be fought out between 3 or 4 clubs.

DATE: 21/09/08

TOPIC: Dismal display by Celtic

Being short 2 or 3 regulars was no excuse for this inept performance from Clonmel Celtic. Celtic may not have been setting the world alight in recent weeks but this was without doubt their poorest performance of the season. Two free kicks in either half put Rock Rovers in a commanding position and but for the heroics of Jonathan O’Mahoney in goal for Celtic the Carrick side could have been well out of sight before Paul Shanahan scored a late consolation goal for Celtic. One or two Celtic players need a reminder that this is a team game. If they are not willing to prepare properly for a game they are letting themselves and more importantly their team mates down. Prepare for changes for Celtic’s next outing.

DATE: 21/09/08

TOPIC: 14s outplayed by Michaels

Our under 14s were in action last Saturday when they went down to a 3-1 defeat to St Michaels. Celtic were 2-0 down at the break and went a further goal down before staging a late rally. Rohan Kahn got one back for Celtic late on.

DATE: 21/09/08

TOPIC: B team draw again

Clonmel Celtic B drew their third game of their league campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Cullen Lattin. Paulie Landers from the spot was Celtic's goalscorer. Celtic finished strongly but couldn't grab a second to secure those elusive first 3 points.

DATE: 18/09/08

TOPIC: Celtic need to push on

It has been an interesting start to the season for Celtic with some unusual patterns emerging. So far they have followed every victory with a defeat. They have a 100% away record but have lost every one of their home games! If this pattern was to continue for the whole season we would finish with 24 points. That doesn’t seem too bad, an improvement on last year, but in truth with the current squad we have we should be aiming much higher. I think it is a realistic ambition to now aim to complete our league campaign unbeaten and also aim for decent runs in cup competitions. This weekend we have a tricky trip to Carrick on Suir to play a Rock Rovers side that haven’t had the best of starts. On paper and on recent form we have a decent chance here. However Rock recorded a fine win away to Bansha in their last game and our record in Carrick hasn’t been the best in recent years. Also word is coming through that we could be missing a few players for the game with Craig Condon picking up an injury last Sunday and Danny Madigan unavailable. It will be an early test to see whether we have the required strength in depth in our squad. Meanwhile on B team will be hoping to pick up their first league win when they travel to Cullen Lattin.

DATE: 17/09/08

TOPIC: Weekend round up

There was only one other game in the Premier League last Sunday. Old Bridge recorded a vital 4-1 win over fellow early strugglers Cahir Park.

DATE: 16/09/08

TOPIC: International tickets

Anyone looking to book tickets for Ireland's home games in the World Cup qualifiers should contact John Power before 1st October. Only club members can book tickets for these games.

DATE: 15/09/08

TOPIC: B team held at home

Clonmel Celtic B drew their second successive home game when they were held to a 2-2 draw by Glengoole. Despite having the better of the first half Celtic trailed 1-0 at the break. Celtic continued to press in the second half and goals from Paddy O'Donnell and Fergus Holohan looked to have turned the game around. However Glengoole scored a late equaliser to leave Celtic on just 2 points from 3 games.

DATE: 14/09/08

TOPIC: Graham Doyle makes impressive return

It was great to see Graham ‘Jiggy’ Doyle back in action for Celtic last Sunday. As you know Graham has been out for well over a year with a bad knee injury. He came off the bench last Sunday week against St Michaels and showed the old touches were still there. Last Sunday he made his first start and he must have been a little anxious testing his knee on such a bad pitch on a terrible day. However he came through in flying colours with a man of the match display. He scored one goal, was involved in three, hit the bar and when he was switched to the centre with twenty minutes remaining he picked a team up that was beginning to struggle and helped them run out comfortable winners. What an impact to make on your return!

DATE: 13/09/08

TOPIC: Celtic climb to 4th

Clonmel Celtic claimed a welcome 3 points with a 6-2 win away to Rosegreen last Sunday. Although it was comfortable in the end Celtic had to battle hard in inclement conditions on an energy sapping pitch against a Rosegreen team desperate for points. It was 3-2 with 18 minutes remaining when Celtic eventually killed off the challenge of Rosegreen. Kenny O’Shea and Paul Kennedy scored 2 each, David Joyce scored the first and Graham Doyle capped a fine display on this return with a goal from a free kick.

DATE: 12/09/08

TOPIC: Must win game for Celtic

Make no doubt about it Sunday's game with Rosegreen is a must win game for Celtic. At the moment it looks as if the title will be battled out between Town, Michaels and Villa with all the rest in a relegation battle at the moment. A mid table hasn't been formed in the division yet. Celtic need to do that with a win on Sunday. If they repeat Sunday's performance they should have every chance against a side still looking for their first win. However they need to be on their guard as its only a matter of time before Rangers win a game. We must make sure that this doesn't happen this Sunday.

DATE: 11/09/08

TOPIC: Rock shock Bansha

Rock Rovers picked up their first win this season with an impressive and surprise 2-1 win away to Bansha. Clonmel Town remain top following a 4-0 win away to Rosegreen while Peake Villa stay in the hunt after a 3-0 win away to Cahir.

DATE: 10/09/08

TOPIC: Cup Draws

Clonmel Celtic have been drawn away to Old Bridge in the FAI Junior Cup. In the Munster Junior Cup they have been paired with the winners of the Borris/Killusty clash with the winners down to play Old Bridge. Two seasons ago we met Rock Rovers in the Munster and FAI Junior Cups and this year there's a real possibility it could be the Bridge in both cups.

DATE: 10/09/08

TOPIC: Kennedy hits 50

Paul Kennedy's double last Sunday saw him reach an impressive milestone, i.e. his 50th Clonmel Celtic goal, a quite a remarkable achievement. Its no wonder Paul had a choice of clubs to join this summer and its such a huge boost to the club that he chose to return. Paul's first season for Celtic was back in 2005/06 when he finished the season with 7 goals in a relegation threatened year for Celtic. The following year he made people sit up and take notice when he bagged a remarkable 37 goals in a great season for Celtic. He only played the opening game for Celtic last season in that infamous game against Town when he was again on the mark and he has scored 5 already season. Without doubt Celtic's best marksman ever. Here's to the next 50!

DATE: 09/09/08

TOPIC: Brave effort from girls

It was heartbreak for the Ladies on Sunday when they played Killenaule in the Tipperary Cup final. Celtic were trying to end what has been a good season for them on a high note but unfortunately it was not to be as they lost out 4-3 in a penalty shoot out after the game had finished scoreless. Killenaule would have been favourites going into this game having already beaten Celtic twice in the league. Celtic however matched them throughout in a game where defences dominated and very few chances were created. When Killeanule did break through the Celtic rearguard they found keeper Amanda Condon in fine form. Celtic felt aggrieved when they had what looked like a legitimate goal from Sabrina Kiely harshly ruled out in the last minute. Celtic eventually lost out 4-3 on penalties with Paula Spillane, Amanda Kiely and Jade Looby successful for the girls.

DATE: 08/09/08

TOPIC: Bad weekend for schoolboys

It was a miserable weekend for the club both our under 14s and under 16s suffered defeats with the under 14s going down 5-0 to Clonmel Town while the under 16s lost 4-1 to St Michaels. Gerard Kennedy was the Celtic scorer in this game.

DATE: 07/09/08

TOPIC: Another Kennedy brace not enough

Any remote league hopes Clonmel Celtic had all but ended on Sunday when they went down 4-2 to St Michaels in an exciting encounter. Once again Celtic fought back from a 2-0 deficit with Paul Kennedy on the mark again. However the old problems resurfaced and proved costly as basic errors saw Celtic conceed twice more. Celtic look great going forward and are creating lots of chances but the errors they are making are killing them at the moment.

DATE: 07/09/08

TOPIC: Heartache for girls

Clonmel Celtic ladies season ended in disapointment when they lost the Tipperary Cup final in the cruelest of ways. Having drawn 0-0 with Killenaule the ladies lost the penalty shootout. It has been a good season for the girls but that will be of little consolation for them tonight.

DATE: 07/09/08

TOPIC: Bad weekend for schoolboys

It was a bad weekend for Clonmel Celtic schoolboys as both the under 14s and under 16s lost. The under 14s went down 5-0 to Clonmel Town on Saturday morning while the under 16s lost 4-1 to St Michaels with Gerard Kennedy on the mark for Celtic.

DATE: 04/09/08

TOPIC: Tough test for Celtic

After getting back to winning ways last Sunday Celtic face an in form St Michaels at Celtic Park this Sunday. After a stuttering start to the new campaign that saw Michaels drop points to Villa and Rosegreen the Tipperary side have put three wins together scoring an amazing 21 goals in the process. When you consider this together with the fact that Michaels scored a total of 17 goals against Celtic last season most neutrals can only see 1 winner this Sunday. It’s true that Celtic haven’t really got going yet and a lot of this is down to the absence of some key players. One of these players, Johnny Cagney is available again this weekend having served a four match suspension. Celtic will have to be at their very best to get anything from this tie but a good showing should arrest St Michaels recent avalanche of goals. Meanwhile the B team have a tough looking game away to Killenaule Rovers who had a good 4-1 win on the opening day of the season.

DATE: 01/09/08

TOPIC: Town go top

Clonmel Town remain the only team with a 100% record following their 2-0 victory away to Peake Villa that sees them replace the Thurles side at the top of the TSDL Premier League. St Michaels appear to have hit form following a 9-1 trouncing of Rock Rovers, that’s 21 goals in three games for the Tipperary Town side. Like Rock Rovers, Rosegreen still await their first win of the season after narrowly going down 4-3 to Bansha Celtic.

DATE: 31/08/08

TOPIC: Welcome win for Celtic

After 2 straight defeats Clonmel Celtic collected a very important three points with a 3-2 win over the Old Bridge in Ferryhouse this morning. Paul Shanahan scored his first goal for Celtic as the first half ended 1-1. In truth the game could have gone anyway in the second half but Glen Nugent proved the difference between the 2 sides setting up Eddie Doyle on 72 minutes and scoring the winner himself with 10 minutes remaining.( See Reports Section).

TOPIC: Villa stay top

Its early days yet but it looks as if Peake Villa are preparing to mount a challange to St Michaels and Town who have dominated the league for years now. After only 3 games Villa, Town and Michaels have already opened a 5 point gap on all the others whose immediate concerns must be getting early points on the board to avoid a relegation battle. Cahir picked up their first points with a welcome 2-0 win at Rock Rovers. After a stuttering start St Michaels seem to be finding form as they scored six again, this time in a 6-2 win over the Bridge while Town manintained their 100% start with a narrow 1-0 win at Bansha.

TOPIC: Celtic go down to Villa

Clonmel Celtic were beaten 2-1 by Peake Villa last Wednesday night at Celtic Park. A debut goal from Slovakian Francietz Hoelick put Celtic ahead on 23 minutes but lack of concentration and some poor defending saw Celtic conceed twice in the first half. They battled gamely in the second half but were unable to conjure up an equaliser and fell to their second defeat in 5 days. On Sunday Celtic take on the Bridge knowing they need to tighten up and avoid dropping any more points at this early stage. (See Reports for more match details).

Clonmel Celtic ladies are through to the Tipperary Cup final following a comfortable 4-0 win over Shinrone last Tuesday night. Sabrina Kiely (2), Jade Looby and Paula Spillane were on the mark for Celtic. It has been a good year for the girls. They finished a creditable 3rd in the league as well as reaching the quarter finals of the National Cup. With the possibility of some silverware they still have a lot to play for.

TOPIC: Landers puts Bs through

Clonmel Celtic B maintained their excellent record in the Shield competition as they advanced to the semi final of the Division 2 Shield courtesy of a Paul Landers goal that was enough to beat Glengoole 1-0. Last year the B team won the Division 3 Shield but they will be aware that it will be a lot more difficult to repeat that achievement this year. This weekend they turn their attention to the league when they kick off their campaign at home to Ballingarry.

TOPIC: Celtic 2nd best in derby

Despite fighting back back from a 2-0 half time deficit to level the score 2-2 at 50 minutes with a brace from Paul Kennedy Celtic eventually lost this derby 4-2. It was a decent 2nd half showing from Celtic with shouts for 2 penalties being ignored. All in all it just wasn't enough on the day with Celtic now hoping to bounce back this Wednesday when they entertain early leaders Peake Villa.

Clonmel Celtic kicked off their season with a hard fought win away to Cahir Park. Celtic legend Paul Kennedy marked his return to the club with the opening goal to give Celtic an early lead. Celtic failed to build on their early dominance and were punished when Cahir got a deserved equaliser before the break. Despite some poor defending Celtic got the breaks late in the second half when Eddy Doyle netted a crucial second and another Celtic legend Paddy Wack O'Donnell scored a last minute goal to give Celtic a 3-1 win.

TOPIC: Celtic to kick off in Cahir

Although the TSDL Premier league kicks off this weekend Clonmel Celtic will have to wait until next Wednesday night when they travel to Cahir for their first outing. Celtic’s record against Cahir is good having won their last four league encounters against them. However all teams are really up for it in their first game and with Cahir having home advantage Celtic will have to put in a big effort to claim the three points. With tough home games coming up against Clonmel Town and Peake Villa it is vital that Celtic make a good start in Cahir. We would like to wish Kenny and Karl the very best for the season ahead.

TOPIC: Celtic go down to Crystal

Clonmel Celtic continued their preseason preparations with a tough challenge against Waterford Crystal in Ferryhouse last Thursday night. In these games the performances are more important than the results so although Celtic went down 3-1 there were some promising signs against quality opposition.

TOPIC: Celtic girls out

Clonmel Celtic Ladies were knocked out of the National Cup when they went down 4-2 to Clare side Newtown. The girls gave themselves a mountian to climb after conceeding three goals in the first half hour. However Jade Looby gave them hope with a fine effort before the break. The Clare side, who looked that bit sharper, restored their 3 goal lead in the second half to lead 4-1. In fairness to Celtic they never gave up and got their reward when Jade Looby got her and her side's second to leave the final score 4-2 to Netown.

TOPIC: Celtic go down in friendlies

Clonmel Celtic gave themselves a tough start to their pre-season preparations with hard games against Dungarvan Utd and Tramore Athletic from the Waterford League last weekend. In their first outing last Friday night Celtic gave their supporters every reason to be optimistic for the coming season with an impressive performance against Dungarvan Utd. They can count themselves unlucky to have lost the game 2-1 with Simon Scully on the mark for Celtic. However they were unable to repeat the performance on Sunday when they faced a quality Tramore Athletic side. At 2-1 they still seemed to be in the game, Paddy O’Donnell scored for Celtic, but four goals midway through the second half saw Tramore run out easy winners. Celtic still have a lot to do. There were impressive turnouts for these friendlies so if this can be replicated for training and we can add 3 or 4 players we should be ok for the coming season.

TOPIC: Girls triumph

It was a great weekend for Clonmel Celtic Ladies as they advanced to the semi finals of the Women’s Junior Challenge Cup with an excellent 2-1 win over Fanad Utd FC from Donegal. Celtic got the perfect start when Jade Looby gave them an early lead. The same player doubled Celtic’s advantage just after the break as Celtic raced into a 2-0 lead. The Donegal side did get one back late on but Celtic held on for a precious victory largely thanks to Maeve Murphy who had a great game in goal for Celtic. This was an impressive performance by Celtic with Louise Burke, in her first outing since last September, putting in an outstanding display with woman of the match Jade Looby also excellent. The Ladies would like to thank their supporters who turned up in large numbers and also all the girls who recently participated in Bag packing fundraising event.

TOPIC: Kenny back at the helm

Kenny OShea has been re-appointed as manager of Clonmel Celtic FC. He will be assisted in his role by Karl Condon. Kenny was manager of Celtic when we had our best ever season in 2006/2007 when we reached the Tipperary Cup final and were in contention for league honours right up to the end of that campaign. Kennys reign in charge ended in controversy at the start of this season when Celtic went down to a heavy opening day defeat to Clonmel Town. The aftermath following this result has been well documented but we can say that the club has learned alot and recovered well to finish the season in a comfortable mid table position. Hopefully under the guidance of Kenny and Karl the club can now progress and become more of a threat next year. Karl of course has managed Celtic and St Olivers Boys before and had a very successful stint in charge. With a bit of luck the combination of two of Clonmel Celtics more successful managers will be the start of exciting times for the club.
