Clonmel Celtic U14s edged out St Kevins in a tight encounter at Ferryhouse yesterday evening. The visitors had a 100% record in the league going into this game but Celtic who have been in good form lately were at them from the start. A difficult wind and a hard service wasn’t conducive to a good night’s football but the sides served up an entertaining game. With the wind at their back Celtic carried more of a threat in the first half but the Borris keeper dealt comfortably with any efforts that found the target. Celtic almost went ahead on the stroke of half time when a fine free kick from Dmytra Makarchuk cannoned off the crossbar and the first half finished scoreless. The second half opened with St Kevins on the front foot as they enjoyed more possession. They nearly took the lead on 62 minutes when Mark Russell’s shot looked destined for the corner of the net but Conor Kiely pulled off a stunning save. Celtic took immediate advantage five minutes later when second half sub Faizan Sultan got on the end of a pass and shot across the keeper to the bottom corner to give Celtic the lead. Borris rallied in response but Celtic held firm to claim the three points. Celtic were well served in particular by Conor Kiely who was assured in goal, Dmytra Marachuk who was rock solid in defence, Barak Williams who put in a great shift in midfield and Cormac Lucey who was a handful upfront.
Meanwhile Clonmel Celtic Ladies were also involved in an entertaining clash with Cashel Town Ladies going down 4-3. Roisin McGrath scored twice for Celtic with Priscilla Kiely also on the scoresheet.
